About Life Lessons Academy

At 35, I sat down to look back at my short but hectic life and tried to make sense of the good, the bad, and everything in between.

From a dream to play AFL that never quite materialised, but an amazing career nonetheless; to relationships that failed, but one that has endured; to parties I missed and ones I will never forget; to jobs I lost and ones I learnt so much from.

Through it all, I couldn’t help but think I often forgot about what really matters. If only I could go back and give myself some advice on how to ride the never-ending wave that is life.

Perhaps the biggest lesson of them all was the ever-present feeling that I could have been better, I could have been kinder, and I could have been happier.

So, with that in mind, I embarked on a new goal: to be the reassuring voice to others that I wish I had during my teens and early 20s.

To reach these young minds, help them navigate the swell, and let them know about the stuff that truly matters...

St Josephs College Geelong
St Josephs College Geelong

On Thursday, our Westcourt High Performance class, along with some of our ACC Football and Soccer representatives, were fortunate to be visited by former House Captain and 1st XVIII football captain Joseph Macula (2006), former AFL player and now coach Shaun Higgins (2005), and former international soccer player Matthew Spiranovic (2006). These three talented former students shared some terrific insights into their development as athletes and people since their time at the College. Joe delivered a powerful presentation on mental health development, while both Shaun and Matthew were very generous with their time, reflecting on enjoying the highlights, working through the challenges, and investing in their mental preparation throughout their careers.
